Aim: How do parasites affect other species? Do Now: on your paper Notes are in purple.

How are predation & parasitism similar? How do they differ? Predation & parasitism are both relationships in which one organism benefits while the other is harmed. In predation, the predator needs to kill its prey in order to benefit In parasitism, the parasite benefits by keeping its host alive

Parasitism Definition: one organism benefits and one is harmed Example: tapeworm and human Which organism benefits, and how does it benefit? Which is harmed, and how is it harmed? monsters inside me same link in youtube

Another example of parasites Guinea worm and human Which organism benefits, and how does it benefit? Which is harmed, and how is it harmed? Eradicating the guinea worm different equally good link youtube

More examples of parasites Worms turn snails into zombies!! Which organism benefits, and how does it benefit? Which is harmed, and how is it harmed? zombie snails different equally good link

Still More Examples of Parasites A crustacean eats a fish’s tongue and replaces it with itself!! Which organism benefits, and how does it benefit? Which is harmed, and how is it harmed? odd couples- snapper parasite different equally good youtube

Yet Another Example of Parasites Cordyceps fungus brainwashes an ant! Which organism benefits, and how does it benefit? Which is harmed, and how is it harmed? Planet Earth- cordyceps fungus same link- youtube

You thought we were finished… Toxoplasma gondii, a cat parasite, infects mice and makes them unafraid of cats Guess what? T. gondii can infect people too- and it makes them like cats more! T. gondii has been nicknamed the “cat lady parasite” Which organism benefits, and how? Which is harmed? How?
