What is ACT4RHINOS Drive:  All about putting rhinos at the centre of communities by engaging these communities, explore and elicit their participation in anti- wildlife poaching then encourage buy-in from these communities to be champions of fighting poaching through various activities.  ANSA believes that it is high time that communities own the war against rhino poaching should eradication of poaching.

 ANSA advocates community initiatives, participation and interventions to eradicate rhino poaching.  What drives these communities around rhino conservation areas (CRCAs) to poaching is POVERTY. SOLUTION Eradicate Poaching = Eradication/Reduction of Poverty (rhinos benefit) (communities benefit)  To save the rhinos, measures to reduce poverty should be implemented (hence reduce poverty to end poaching).

Current Situation Eradication of Rhino Poaching Efforts Poverty Reduction / Eradication Efforts The face of poaching is black, the face of the middle and front-end of the rhino poaching value chain is white and Asian Black people think saving rhinos is a White People’s thing. They are sidelined All Resources Focused here. Increased Poaching

 Why is situation like this? - More funds and resources are directed at anti-rhino poaching.  What is the result of current situation? – More and more poaching.  The call ---- KILL THE POACHER. Is to be poor a crime that deserves a death penalty? There is a solution that does not involve killing the poor. THE CHALLENGE – GETTING THEM TO SAY YES  How do we get communities to say YES to anti-rhino poaching? ……… (in the face of poachers dangling incentives/money to them)

THE ANSWER Eradication of Rhino Poaching EffortsPoverty Reduction / Eradication Efforts

 In light of poachers incentivising communities, there is need to introduce immediate tangible benefits to communities. Act Now South Africa’s recommendations: CREATING RHINO - ASSOCIATED VALUE WHICH COMMUNITIES (CRCAs) CAN FEEL, SEE AND EXPERIENCE  Rhino Jobs  Rhino Infrastructure  Rhino Community Projects and Rhino Small Scale Farmers Projects

Churches The role impact of churches in communities is huge such as ZCC & other. How can DEA benefit? Taxi Associations Involve them. Many of their members used for transportation Chiefs & Traditional Leaders Involve them in anti-poaching drive International Organisations Big events related to rhinos must be held in CRCAs or involve CRCAs. Political Organisations Work with parties to use their grassroots support bases. Workers Unions How can we work with Unions such as Teachers Unions to help get their members spread the message in communites where they are? Property Developers Various Property Developers to develop properties like malls & shopping centres naming them RHINOS SuperSport / DSTV Sports Competitions Sport Talent Development & Scouting. Etc
