Title and URL  Title: Microsoft Word 2007 Basic Features  URL:

Audience  The target audience was for middle school aged children and up  The level of knowledge needed to understand the tutorial was for complete beginners with little to no prior experience with Microsoft Word

Format  Information is given about the basic features of Microsoft Word and includes exercises related to the information  The tutorial uses screen captures  The tutorial is broken down into exercises, headings, and subheadings.  The main headings include the basic features, and the subheadings are broken down more in depth  The steps are in paragraph form under each heading and subheading.  The exercises are step-by-step procedures in mastering a specific feature of Microsoft Word  Critique: The organization of the tutorial is organized with theoretical knowledge, basic exercises to practice using Word, and snapshots to actually visualize all the lessons.

Tone  The tone was in a formal and serious manner.  The tutorial enables students who lack experience in using Microsoft Word to become familiar with its features.  The tutorial went in-depth and listed the proper procedures on how to accomplish the task.  However, despite the tutorial’s brilliant ways of demonstrating how to use Microsoft Word, we would have enjoyed some humor as opposed to a heavy dose of seriousness.

Clarity  The steps were extremely easy to follow because the page was extremely organized.  The steps were numbered, and properly used bold text to emphasize important steps.  The screenshots were labeled and allowed the user to follow along visually.  All of the steps were present in the tutorial.

Exercise  We completed exercise 3 of the tutorial, which attempted to teach the user how to bold, italicize, and underline words.  The tutorial was very thorough and understandable.  The use of screenshots, in particular, made it easy to follow.  The author showed different ways that words can be bold, italicized, or underline.  This allows the user to choose whichever option they are more comfortable with.

What We Learned  Include graphics or screenshots that are edited with arrows in Paint to point to an item of interest.  The screenshots should also include an explanation.  The wording of the tutorial should fit the intended audience so that it is not confusing.  Use varying levels of font and style so it is clear and concise.  Include many steps so that the intended audience can follow them easily one by one.
