OPWP AER PAEW Policy making, Decision making, Attract investment, Feasibility studies... Regulation, Tariff, License, legal claims... The single buyer, Project development, Contracts management and follow-up... Electricity in Oman

Introduction  Renewable Energy Resources (2008, by AER): Target: 1- How much renewable energy is available 2- Possibility for electricity generation Results: 1- Significant potential from solar and wind 2- Limited potential from geothermal, biogas and wave Recommendations: 1- Conduct pilot projects in Rural areas (currently Diesel generation) 2- Start feasibility study for utility (large scale) solar generation

Challenges

 Cost Challenges  Bankable Data  Subsidy  Target

Initiatives

 Renewables Readiness Assessment (In collaboration with IRENA) International Initiatives A holistic evaluation of the sultanate conditions and identifying the actions needed to overcome barriers to renewable energy deployment.  Recommendations:  Policy and Regulation  RE Implementation and Market  Institutional and Legal Framework  Resource Mapping  R&D and Capacity Building

International Initiatives  Roof-top Program An incentive program is investigated from technical and financial point of view for roof-top PV systems.  Residential  1.4GW  450MW  FiT  20 years

 Dhophar wind farm (50MW) International Initiatives 25 turbines 2MW  Operation: 2017

Local Initiatives  Feasibility study of large scale solar power plants ( MW) 1- Best sites for large scale power plants ( MW) out of 23 sites 2- Best technologies for these locations 3- Legal and financial framework for the project Results:  4 locations: Adam, Manah, Al-Khabourah and Ibri  Preliminary environmental permits for Adam and Manah sites  Metrological stations were installed

Local Initiatives  National Energy Strategic Study The study will produce a detailed energy supply development plan and demonstrate the impacts for the whole Oman economy through a comprehensive energy balance and macroeconomic model. Target and Phasing Policy and Strategy

Local initiatives  Wind Atlas The best sites for wind energy plants will be identified in two stages: 1- Identifying and ranking the best sites for wind farms in the Sultanate considering the local and ground constraints. 2- Wind Masts will be installed on the best sites for Bankable data (at 80m). First stage to finish in 2nd quarter of 2015

Other Projects  Solar Desalination (small scale)  Energy Recovery

Capacity Building

 Strategic Research Program for Renewable Energy Capacity Building 1- Power Generation and Storage. 3- Air Conditioning and Cooling.  Hybrid mobile solar/wind prototype 2- Water Desalination. 4- Energy Efficiency and Conservation.  Dissemination Program with “NAMA” group
