Chapter 3: Designs That Take Flight Jamy Drouillard

Who is Jamy? Is another one of Amy’s students. Develops a small helicopter that will be used to hold a camera at sporting events. Believes that EDP must be followed in order.

Key words Possible negative consequences of a new technology

EDP Define the problem Research the problem Develop possible solutions Be clear about the problem you’re trying to solve. Research the problem There are may ways to research a problem Develop possible solutions Develop different ideas. Select the best solution Compare the different solutions using the criteria and constraints. Build the prototype Build several prototypes. Test and evaluate the prototype Where it will be safe Communicate Communicating clearly and persuasively is very important. Redesign Nearly all new designs will need to be redesigned.

Jamy Drouillard designed a small helicopter... To hold a camera at sporting events. To ride and have fun. To make children surprise. To send a package more quickly.

First design process, define the problem, is to Communicate clearly and persuasively. Build several prototypes. Develop different ideas. Be clear about the problem.

How does Jamy research the problem? Jamy did not research at all Jamy talked to his friends to seek their opinions and ideas. Jamy went on to the Internet and searched. Jamy looked at technologies already on the market that are similar.

How did his contributions help the team? Jamy was a member of the team that went to Haiti. What else did he contribute besides his engineering skills? He speaks Haitian Creole. It helps his team to communicate with people in the area.

What did you like/ learn from this article? First sentence: I liked… I learned… I was surprised … I wonder… Second sentence: For example, … For instance, …

Discussion Question 1 Like Shawn, Jamy talks about the importance of communicating the solution. But the two engineers must communicate their solutions to very different audiences. Who is Shawn’s audience? Who is Jamy’s? Shawn’s audience is the users. Jamy’s audience is a company that may manufacture and sell the helicopter.

Discussion Question 2 Jamy thinks it’s a safe bet that whatever his team develops, will eventually need to be redesigned. Why? No technology is perfect. There is always debugging” to do. This happens because of limitations on time, money, human skill, materials, and so on. Also, the technology must adjust the needs of society, which is always changing. Technology must be updated continuously.

Discussion Question 3 Every engineer has different motivations. Jamy loves the creative aspects of engineering. To him, developing a new technology is fun, sort of like playing a game. Amy Smith and Shaw Frayne are motivated to improve the quality of people’s lives. What might motivate you to learn about and develop new technologies?
