If you were to describe a tree to someone who had never seen one before, what would you say? How would you describe it? Would you tell them what it looked like? The different parts? How it grows? Where you might find a tree? Have a go…

DATE: Learning Intention: To know the different parts of a tree. Trees are amazing living organisms. They have many parts, and just like the parts of our bodies, each part has a specific job. See if you can identify some of the parts of a tree and have a think about what function they might have.

Which pictures match the vocabulary bank? DATE: Learning Intention: To know the different parts of a tree. Vocabulary roots bark crown trunk pith leaves tap root sapwood cambium branches heartwood Which pictures match the vocabulary bank?

DATE: Learning Intention: To know the different parts of a tree. It’s time to get working. Some of you will have vocabulary cards, some of you will have image cards, and some of you will have cards describing the roles of tree parts. You will need to move around the room and find two other people who have a match for your card. You are going to have to listen carefully and read your cards carefully.

For example… would the cards below be a good match? DATE: Learning Intention: To know the different parts of a tree. The Bark Vocabulary roots bark crown The job of this part of the tree is to spread the leaves out along the crown of the tree. Coming out from the trunk they also help transport water and nutrients. trunk pith leaves tap root sapwood cambium branches heartwood For example… would the cards below be a good match?

Why not? see if you can do better. DATE: Learning Intention: To know the different parts of a tree. It is now time to make a tree using what you have learnt. How did you do? Did you manage to match your card with the other two? Now we need to put them all together. It is now time to make a tree using what you have learnt. Use the image of a tree on your tables to write your information on. Be sure to write the information in the correct place.

DATE: Learning Intention: To know the different parts of a tree. Crown The crown is made up of the leaves and branches at the top of a tree.  Bark The outside layer of the trunk, branches and twigs of trees. The bark serves as a protective layer for the more delicate inside wood of the tree.

Can you name some of the parts of a tree and the jobs they do? DATE: Learning Intention: To know the different parts of a tree. Can you name some of the parts of a tree and the jobs they do? How do you think you did today? Give yourself and your work a mark out of 10 (but keep it secret).

What did the little tree say to the big tree?

Leaf me alone…get it? Leaf, me, alone!
