How are people affected by their environment? Landforms Bodies of Water How are people affected by their environment? Climate Plant/Animal Life

WARM-UP Question… If you move from a cold region of the US to a warm region of the US what changes might you have to make in your: Clothing?? Food?? Home?? Explain why…

Human-Environmental Interaction Human: Mankind Environment: The surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates.

ADAPTATION and modification Like all animals, people must adapt to or modify their environment. That includes the bodies of water, landforms, climate, plants, and animals they find in the place they live.

Adapt – VS – Modify What is the difference between adapting and modifying?? To ADAPT is to change something about your needs to fit your surroundings To MODIFY is to change something about your surroundings to fit your needs

Adaptation People have to adapt to their environment because they may not have a choice in where they live.

Bodies of Water People must adapt to the water sources available to them Fresh water is essential to human life. Why do you think this is so? Food Drink Livestock Bathing Transportation

What bodies of water do we have around us What bodies of water do we have around us? Where does our fresh water come from? What is an Aquifer ?? ADAPTATION ??

Landforms People must adapt to landforms. Most people settle in flat, fertile valleys and plains so they can build homes and grow crops. Where would you live?

How did this land affect how the Incas (One of the earliest civilizations) lived? Hint…they lived high in the Andes Mountains with frigid temperatures and barren land ADAPTATION ??

Climate The reputation an area has for it’s weather People must adapt to their climate Climate affects How we dress What we grow Plants Livestock What shelter we live in

Climate Clothing? Plants? Livestock? Shelter? How do you think our climate affects how people live? Clothing? Plants? Livestock? Shelter? ADAPTATION ??

Plant and Animal Life People have to adapt to the plants and animals found where they live. People use these as sources of food, clothing, and building materials.

How do you think this animal affected the Native Americans way of life? ADAPTATION ??

OUTPUT TIME Choose two regions from around the United States (refer to your notes!!) and describe how the people have ADAPTED to their environment. Be sure to consider the four main areas we discussed. This can be done with a partner!!

Modification People often modify, or change, their environment to meet their needs. Some examples are: Building of Dams (water modification) Agriculture (landform and plant modification) Urban Growth (landform modification) Useful forms of energy (climate and other)

The Building of Dams Dam: a barrier to obstruct the flow of water, built across a stream or river. People construct dams to: Prevent floods Generate electric power Store water for drinking and irrigation

Agriculture Agriculture is the growing of food, plants and livestock. People clear land to prepare the land for growing crops and grazing livestock.

Urban Growth Urbanization: concentration of people from rural (country) to urban (city) areas People modify the landforms where they live by building towns and cities.

Urban Growth How has technology affected urban growth?

Urbanization of dubai 2000 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDQQ3FHJqbc&feature=related&safety_mode=true&persist_safety_mode=1&safe=active

Energy Energy : the ability to do work(heat, mechanical, electrical) _________________________________________ People cut down trees, mine for coal, and drill for oil to meet their energy needs. ________________________________________ RENEWABLE RESOURCES: can be re-made or reproduced (Ex: water, solar, wind) NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES: can’t be re-made or reproduced (Ex: oil, natural gas, coal)

OUT PUT TIME On page 36 write an ACROSTIC POEM using the letters in one of the modifications we discussed. Example: Threatens many people Over many miles it can travel Ruins homes and landforms Never try to out run them Always hard to predict when they are coming Does damage to cars and businesses too Outside is not a good place to be in one
