Image source: None of our student devices are managed. Each user is the administrator of their own device. Student devices do not connect to the network, except for internet access.

Google Apps for Education (GAFE) across the school. Hapara Teacher Dashboard for class file management.

Resources provided to students through faculty & subject websites. Teacher created, built up over a number of years. The websites contain: written Information videos worksheets lesson plans presentations interactive activities Generally not static links, but embedded content.

So students manage their own laptops? Backups – yes Software updates – yes

But don’t they install games? Download videos? Music? Yes, and yes, and yes.

But if a student is playing a game, watching a video, or listening to music it’s a classroom management issue, not a technology issue.

Web filtering? At school Facebook/Tumblr etc blocked Melbourne CEO content filtering YouTube not blocked for both upload and viewing At home no restrictions parental responsibility

What does the school community think? Do people in general agree or disagree with our approach?

Teachers are happy. Students always have their laptops Students look after their laptops No delays logging onto the network when class starts

Leadership is happy. successful laptop rollout minimal problems in day-to-day laptop use Significant money saved on servers, storage & staffing

IT Techs are happy. More free time to keep cabling tidy. Many fewer network issues to manage Less onsite storage and backups

Students are happy. Well of course they are Happy students are productive students

Parents are happy. easy connection to home networks ability to load printer drivers encouraged to create parent accounts on laptops

If problems occur? parental controls enabled to restrict internet access and remove the ability to load programs Currently affecting 4 or 5 students in the school.

Rollout issues? an issue with Apple IDs for younger students needed for App Store and iTunes access Apple don’t make it easy!
