SC.6.L.14.4 Compare and contrast the structure and function of major organelles of plant and animal cells, including cell wall, cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, mitochondria, and vacuoles.

SC.6.L.14.4 What do you have to do?

SC.6.L.14.4 Compare and contrast the structure and function of major organelles of plant and animal cells, including cell wall, cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, mitochondria, and vacuoles.

SC.6.L.14.4 How many organelles do you have to know? Which organelles do you have to know?

SC.6.L.14.4 Compare and contrast the structure and function of major organelles of plant and animal cells, including 1. cell wall, 2. cell membrane, 3. nucleus, 4. cytoplasm, 5. chloroplasts, 6. mitochondria, and 7. vacuoles.

I Do - Notes

Cell Wall Only found in plant cells. Provides support for the plant.

Cell Wall – Check for Understanding Why wouldn’t an animal cell need a cell wall?

A B C G D F E

Cell Membrane Found in all cells. Controls what enters and leaves the cell.

Cell Membrane – Check for Understanding Why does a cell need a cell membrane?

A B C G D F E

Nucleus Found in all animal and plant cells, but not all cells. A cell with a nucleus is called a ________cell. A cell without a nucleus is called a _________ cell. Where DNA is found in the cell. Controls all the activities in the cell.

Nucleus – Check for Understanding What parts of the cell might be negatively affected if a mutation occurred in the DNA?

A B C G D F E

Cytoplasm Found in all cells. The gel-like substance inside the cell that contains all the cell parts (organelles).

Cytoplasm

Cytoplasm – Check for Understanding Why is it important that the inside of the cell is not just empty space?

A B C G D F E

Chloroplasts Found only in plant cells. This is where light energy is absorbed. This is where photosynthesis occurs.

Chloroplasts – Check for Understanding Green plants are called producers. Why are green plant called producers? What do they produce?

Mitochondria Found in plant and animal cells, but not prokaryotic cells. Location for the production of energy. Where cellular respiration takes place.

Mitochondria – Check for Understanding Why might an animal cell have more mitochondria than a plant cell?

A B C G D F E

Vacuoles Found in plant and animal cells, but there is a BIG difference. In a plant cell, the vacuole is HUGE, and there is only one. In an animal cell, the vacuole is small, and there may be more than one.

Vacuoles – Check for Understanding A plant vacuole is sometimes compared to a balloon. Why is this a good comparison?

A B C G D F E

We Do – Part 1 With your table partners – choose one of the following options. Southside Middle School City of Jacksonville Human Body Compare how the parts of your choice above have similar parts within them.

We Do – Part 2 Label the plant cell with all the parts from the standard.
