Metacognitive Markers-Literacy in the Classroom M & M’s

by Susan Leonard, RN Health Sciences Northern Nash High School

Critical Thinking The art of thinking about your thinking. Cognitive skills enable one to know about the world. Meta cognitive skills, (meta-knowing), entail knowing about one’s and other’s knowing.

What are M & M’s ? Metacognitive Markers -> Thinking Notes When students highlight, underline or annotate information they read for specific purposes. Used in close reading. Close Reading is a central focus of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). It requires students to get truly involved with the text they are reading. The purpose is to teach them to notice features and language used by the author.

NNHS M & M’s ____Unknown Words *Interesting Information ? Question ! Prior Knowledge

How?? Ideally students have their own copy to mark up. May use transparencies over articles or notes. May annotate on Mac Books.

NNHS M & M’s Rubric All M & M’s must be present. Boxed title with prediction Summary Numbered paragraphs

M & M’s Common Core Push Towards Literacy Real World Application College/Career Ready

Why?? Children need to know roughly 2,500-3,000 words upon entering Kindergarten. Must learn 75 words per week. Roughly 16 new words per day. ( Scholastic)

“ Why Teach Vocabulary” The average student learns about 3,000 words a year, or six to eight words per day. If students are taught new words at a rate of eight to ten per week for 37 to 50 weeks, about 300 to 500 words per year can be taught through direct instruction. This leaves a large portion of words to be learned through independent reading, which is essential to acquiring word knowledge.- Cynthia & Drew Johnson, Anaxos,Inc.

Evaluation of Responses Students develop metacognitive skills. Students may use own responses to enhance discussions or writing about the text. Teachers gain ideas for discussions and insight about where students may need more support or instruction.
