 What is “identity?”  How can we express our identities?  How have our identities been affected by globalization?  Nationalism, Internationalism, & Identity Identity

The unique sum of characteristics associated with an individual, group, or thing There are some aspects of our identities that are stable and some aspects that change from one situation to the next

Identity  Stable Characteristics (same in every situation):  Gender  Race  Origin  Age  Changing Characteristics (depend on the situation):  How you refer to yourself (daughter, son, friend, brother, team-mate, etc.)  Social identity (the identity we create for others to see)

Just as individual identities have been affected by globalization, so have collective identities!  Is economic competition introduced by globalization (more businesses) is leading to more individualistic societies (instead of collectivist )?  The rapid changes of globalization have re-vitalized fundamentalism – a desire for the past and a loss of tolerance for differences in religion and culture Can you think of any “real-world” examples???
