AIM: HOW IS THE CONCEPT OF “GRIT” RELATED TO SUCCESS? Do Now: A. Define the term Perseverance and describe a situation in which you have persevered. B. “Talent is more important than IQ.” Explain why you agree or disagree?

AIM: HOW IS THE CONCEPT OF “GRIT” RELATED TO SUCCESS? TOOLBOX 1: GRIT Grit Theory: a theory about what makes people successful created by psychologist Angela Ducksworth. It is based on character traits such as perseverance, hard work, and ambition (NOT I.Q. or grades) that help one achieve long term goals. What is IQ? – a number that represents your intelligence and is based on a score on a special test.

AIM: HOW IS THE CONCEPT OF “GRIT” RELATED TO SUCCESS? ABOUT ANGELA DUCKSWORTH. Attended Harvard and Oxford and watched how some students succeeded while others dropped out. She wondered about the difference between these students since many who make it to Harvard and Oxford have high IQ’s, money, and many other advantages that help to get them there. (She also studied national spelling bee contestants and cadets at West Point.) Over and over, she found that IQ was not the most important indicator of success and neither were the grades earned in school. The most important factor was grit.

AIM: HOW IS THE CONCEPT OF “GRIT” RELATED TO SUCCESS? WHAT IS GRIT? Guts – personal courage and determination; toughness of character. Perseverance – to achieve despite difficulties, failure or opposition Tenacity – fact of being very determined. Fortitude – courage in pain or adversity. Not Giving Up When Life Gets Hard—no matter what happens! Remaining Focused On A Goal When You Encounter Set Back Stick-to-it-iveness Sustained Interest In Long Term Goals Especially When You Encounter Set Backs!!

AIM: HOW IS THE CONCEPT OF “GRIT” RELATED TO SUCCESS? GRIT AND ACHIEVEMENT Grit is connected to character achievements. Qualities of grit are teachable and learnable. You must begin by recognizing and acknowledging not only your character strengths but your character deficiencies (weakness). Everyone can improve their level of grit. Grit is not based on your IQ. Grit is as essential as talent to high achievement.

For questions 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 11 assign the following points: 1 = Very much like me 2 = Mostly like me 3 = Somewhat like me 4 = Not much like me 5 = Not like me at all Add up all the points and divide by 12. The maximum score on this scale is 5 (extremely gritty), and the lowest scale on this scale is 1 (not at all gritty). DON’T WORRY IF YOUR GRIT SCORE IS LOW! YOU CAN ALWAYS RAISE IT!
