Friday, 10/10/2014 In Class: 1.Prepare CN format: 1.OBJ: SWBAT describe how climate is affected by topography, volcanos, regional vegetation, and periodic changes in Earth’s orbit. 2.Topic: Oceans and other factors that affect climate 2.Take Cornell Notes (first from me, then p.489) Homework: 1.Worksheet (front and back) 2.Create Questions and summary for your Cornell notes. 3.Complete unfinished processing activities (even numbered pages. 4.Study vocab cards.

Oceans affect on the climate:  Transport heat across long distances  Ocean currents are caused by an unequal heating of water and salinity (salt concentration)  Themohaline Circulation (Cool water more dense than warm, and saltier water is more dense than less salty water)  Therefore, cooler-saltier water travels deeper in the ocean, and sinks at the poles  Warmer, less salty water travels northward from the equator to displace the sinking water  The warm surface waters keep surrounding land warmer  “Cooling affect” because ocean water absorbs carbon dioxide  CO 2 moves back & forth between the atmosphere and ocean water  Oceans can hold 50% more CO 2 than the atmosphere – at a HUGE cost  Oceans absorb CO 2 more slowly than humans add it to the atmosphere  ENSO – big effect on Pacific region for droughts and floods

Ocean Absorption of Carbon Dioxide

On the left side of your INB, write… 1.Why does a region’s latitude affect its climate? (Make sure to mention equator, poles, and the regions in between the poles) 2.How is the behavior of warm air different from that of cold air? Relate this difference to global wind patterns. 3.Explain what happens during El Nino. 4.What is the relationship between altitude and climate? How does this account for the differences in ecosystems at the base of a mountain and its peak? As you use your NOTES to answer the questions, go back and highlight or underline where you found the information in your INB.

You SILENTLY take Cornell notes on p
