Today we will be learning about Money (make change, compare and order) Good Afternoon! Today we will be learning about Money (make change, compare and order) Let’s warm up : 1) 1feet = __ in 2) 1 kg = ___ g 3) 100 cm = ___ m 4) 1 quart = ___ pints CONFIDENTIAL

Let’s start with the topic Money (make change, compare and order) Currency: It is a unit of exchange, facilitating the transfer of goods and/or services. It is one form of money, where money is anything that serves as a medium of exchange, and a standard of value. To facilitate trade between currency zones, there are exchange rates, which are the prices at which currencies (and the goods and services of individual currency zones) can be exchanged against each other. CONFIDENTIAL

Penny Coins and paper money are both forms of currency. Let us see some forms of currency. Penny 1 penny, 1 cent, or 1¢ Count by one to count pennies. 1 cent, 2 cents, 3 cents, 4 cents and so on. CONFIDENTIAL

Nickel 1 nickel, 5 cents, or 5¢ Count by fives to count nickels. 5 cents, 10 cents, 15 cents, 20 cents and so on. 5 pennies = 1 nickel 1 cent + 1 cent + 1 cent + 1 cent + 1 cent = 5 cents or 1 nickel. CONFIDENTIAL

Dime 1 dime, 10 cents, or 10¢ Count by tens to count dimes.  10 cents, 20 cents, 30 cents, 40 cents and so on. 10 pennies = 1 dime 1 cent + 1 cent + 1 cent + 1 cent + 1 cent + 1 cent + 1 cent + 1 cent + 1 cent + 1 cent = 10 cents or 1 dime. 2 nickels = 1 dime. 5 cents + 5 cents = 10 cents or one dime. CONFIDENTIAL

Quarter 1 quarter, 25 cents, or 25¢ Count by 25 to count quarters. 25 cents, 50 cents, 75 cents, $1.00 and so on. 25 pennies = 1 quarter 5 nickels = 1 quarter 2 dimes and 1 nickel = 1 quarter CONFIDENTIAL

Dollar Bill 1 Dollar 100 cents, or 100¢ Count by 100 to count dollars. $1.00, $2.00, $3.00 and so on. 4 quarters = 1 Dollar 20 nickels = 1 Dollar 10 dimes = 1 Dollar CONFIDENTIAL

Write the amount of money shown CONFIDENTIAL

Make Change Mary bought a bag at a price of $7.67; Amount given to the shopkeeper was $10.00. What change did she get? Start at $7.67. Count up to $10.00 $7.68 $7.69 $7.70 $7.75 $8.00 $9.00 $10.00 CONFIDENTIAL

So Mary should receive $2.33 as change. To check the change count the bills and coins from the greatest to least value. $1.00 $2.00 $2.25 $2.30 $2.31 $2.32 $2.33 So Mary should receive $2.33 as change. CONFIDENTIAL

Compare and Order Money Amounts You can use a place value chart to compare money amounts. Start at left. Look for the first place where the digits are different. Example: Compare $306.97 and $319.23 Hundred Dollars Ten Dollars One Dollar Cents 3 6 97 1 9 23 Same different The amount $319.23 has more ten dollars than $306.97 So, $319.23 > $306.97 CONFIDENTIAL

You can also compare and order the same way you do for whole numbers: Compare and order from least to greatest: $7.13, $6.95, $6.89 Step 1: Line up the decimal points. Compare the three amounts. $7.13 $6.95 $6.89 7>6 So $7.13 is the greatest number. CONFIDENTIAL

Step 2: Compare the remaining two amounts. $6.95 $6.89 8<9, So, $6.89 is less than $6.95 Step 3: Write the money amounts in order from least to greatest. $6.89 < $6.95 < $7.13 CONFIDENTIAL

You round money the same way you do with whole numbers. Step 1: Find the digit in the dollars place. $7.13 $6.89 $6.95 CONFIDENTIAL

Step 2: Look at the place to the right of the dollars place. $7.13 $6.89 $6.95 Step 3: If the digit is less than 5, round down. If the digit is 5 or greater, round up. $7.13 $7.00 $6.89 $7.00 $6.95 $7.00 CONFIDENTIAL
