Homework Read “On Dumpster Diving” by Lars Eighner in 50 Essays. Look for quotes (we’re doing a Socratic Seminar next class). Answer questions #1-4 that follow the reading. Suggestion: Read the questions before you complete the reading. Bring your copy of 50 Essays to the next class. Your Lesson 25 vocabulary quiz will be next class. Study using your handout. Be sure Ms. Taylor actually gives you this handout! Complete the multiple choice for Eighner.

Lesson 25 Quiz I pledge upon my honor that I have neither given nor received assistance in the completion of this work. Good luck, everyone!

Grade in class Take out a colored pen or highlighter.

We’ll be having a Socratic seminar today, so find five good quotes to discuss from “On Dumpster Diving” by Lars Eighner. Address SOAPSTone. Consider his writing style, the placement of information, the arrangement (process analysis), and his intro and ending. Be sure to keep your book out for discussion!

Socratic Seminar Collaborative, intellectual dialogue facilitated with open-ended questions about a text. Listen carefully. Address one another respectfully. Address comments to the group; no side conversations. Use sensitivity to take turns and not interrupt others. Speak loudly and clearly. The quality of this discussion is up to you.

Pair Questions 1. What is the effect of Eighner’s attention to language in the first five paragraphs? Does this appeal more to logos, ethos, or pathos? Explain. 2. Note the end of Paragraph 37. What rhetorical purpose does it serve? 3. Identify and explain two examples of irony in the section about students (Para. 25-30). 4. Do Eighner’s thoughts about Lizbeth appeal chiefly to ethos, logos, or pathos? Explain. 5. What purpose does the careful distinction between the “true scavenger” and the “can scrounger” serve?

Homework Bring your copy of 50 Essays to the next class. Read “Serving in Florida” by Barbara Ehrenreich in 50 Essays. Answer questions #1-3 immediately following the reading. You will be sharing your responses in class. Look at question number 4--we will be working with this question next class. Complete the multiple choice for “Serving in Florida”.
