GOAL Highlight new avenues of employment for individuals with disabilities who are highly focused on computers. Show how the Home Society has supported individuals to achieve success in working with computer hardware and software as well as website development. Offer support to help establish similar jobs in your society. Demonstrate potential money saving’s by reducing the cost of hiring outside computer support.
HISTORY OF SELF ADVOCATE NET WEBSITE Cam showed a template version of the website 15 years ago at the 1st annual Self Advocacy Leadership Institute Retreat at Edenvale. The website was develop to help those with disabilities to get online access to voice their concerns. By the second Edenvale Retreat the new website was called By 2005 myself and Joe had came onboard to help us with the ongoing development of the website. Over the years there has been many versions of the website as we have continued to improve our skills and knowledge. The website won the Reboot BC award for public value transformation. Since 2013 we have evolved to have joint venture with CLBC and the creation of the first Editorial Board to communicate with other self advocate groups in the province.
HISTORY WORKING WITH HOME SOCIETY How did we start at Home Society? I started in February 2005 working on computers as my boss Cam saw I had potential to work on computer hardware and software at Home Society. We later created a second position to assist us and help maintain the office computers and group homes for Home Society. As my skills level grew I was given the role of the Computer Lab Manager.
WHAT WORK WE DO FOR HOME SOCIETY Support all Home Society and Group homes computers needs Distribute refurbished computers or repair equipment for Self Advocates and other non-profits. Run workshops to teach skills Develop and support the SAN Website NETWORK SIZE: 20 office computers plus 15 laptops 70 Group homes plus 30 Self Advocate computers
JOB DESCRIPTION/SKILLS Manage computer inventory Intake for repairs – give loaner Run diagnostics Replace faulty hardware Backup, save data Format hard drive Install software Perform upgrades for software Setup and test printers Coach and mentor care givers and support trainers Setup laptops, video, projectors and wireless network for training classes Setup office network Provide training for staff on connecting to the network Take in donation computers for refurbishment Develop, manage SAN website
