WHAT IS SOCIOLOGY? The study of social institutions (family, marriage, schools, religion, government, etc), social interaction (among institutions, individuals and groups, etc), and social processes (politics, fashion, trends, violence, social problems, etc), as well as their outcomes and consequences.
As Auguste Comte described it, Sociology is the mother of all disciplines.
The Sociologist, therefore, is the one trained in the science and art of studying and understanding social institutions, interaction, and processes as well as their outcomes and consequences.
Because the society is both the laboratory and theatre for the work of the sociologist, the contents of which are stable, evolving, growing, developing, and changing, the Sociologist is thus a permanent student of society.

WHAT IS POLITICS? Politics is a social process and social interaction aimed at acquiring and exercising authority and power.
In this broad sense, politics is present where two or more individuals relate with each other. It is in the family, church, school, government, etc.
For our purpose here, however, the Politics referred to is the one defined as “the authoritative allocation of scarce resources", and the scheming and struggle for power to control the government of a defined territory.
Since the 21st century started in the year 2000, our focus on the 21st century politics in Nigeria will proceed from 1999 when the current democratic process started.
