LIS Quiz I Review

32. Adaptation Ability for an organism to change/adjust to its surroundings

How do LIS Abiotic Factors affect Plant/Animal Adaptations?

Salinity In a salt marsh, salt tends to concentrate as the water evaporates during low tide. Glasswort – stores water (moisture) in leaves or stems - so the plant does not dry out and die. (tastes salty)

Salinity In the Sound if levels are too high or too low fish have the ability to move to better suited conditions

Tides At Low Tide: Worms must bury in sand Crabs hide under rocks Crab coloring helps to camouflage with rocks

Tides As Tide Comes In: Barnacles have ability to attach themselves to rocks or shells in order to “hold on”

Sunlight Periwinkles (Snails) gather at low tide on the lower half of the rocks and below seaweed where it remains moist and out of the direct sun.

Soil Dune grass has deeply ribbed blades so they can catch sand blown by the wind, causing it to fall to the base of the plant, creating its own “dune”. (Holding the grass in place)

The Race Low Energy Shoreline Estuary Intertidal Zone Tidal Flat Salt Marsh Benefits of a Wetland

LIS Animals Zooplankton Worm Snail Crab, Spider Crab, Lobster Barnacle, Clam, Oyster Striped Bass Seagull & Heron Seal Human Benthos Water Column Carnivore Herbivore Omnivore Sessile Filter Feeder

Density Formula Show work with units Density of Water

Density Examples Block A has a volume of 100ml and a mass of 50g. Find the density of Block A and decide if it will sink or float in water – explain why. Block B has a volume of 5ml and a mass of 10g. Find the density of Block B and decide if it will sink or float in water – explain why. **Be sure to show all work and units!**

Answers to Density Examples Block A: D= M/V D= 50g/100ml D =.5g/ml Block A – will float because it is less dense than water which has a density of 1g/ml Block B: D=M/V D = 10g/5ml D= 2g/ml Block B – will sink because it is more dense that water which has a density of 1g/ml

4. Salinity Fresh Water Brackish Water Salt Water

(Back of Flashcard) Salt Content – how much Salt (NaCl) is in something Salt Water / Ocean Water 35 ppt & over – Takes more energy to boil and to freeze – Densest Brackish Water – less than 35ppt but greater than.5ppt mixture of fresh & salt – LIS Fresh Water – less than.5ppt – little dissolved material – Rivers, Streams,

SaltWater Salt water is made during the movement of water over land as it dissolves solid salt crystals in rock.

What is pH? Know Acidic, Neutral, and Basic Ranges on Scale
