ASHRAE and Code Interaction and TCs The ASHRAE Standards Committee focuses on code interaction through its Code Interaction Subcommittee (CIS) a subcommittee of Standards Committee. Procedures can be found at – technology/standards--guidelines/standards-activities technology/standards--guidelines/standards-activities 1PC Chairs Training: Running Effective Meetings

What is CIS? CIS approves all official ASHRAE positions on code proposals. All proposals and comments from ASHRAE must be approved by CIS. TCs can provide positions on proposals and comments to CIS, which will become ASHRAE’s position on those proposals and comments if approved. Positions should be consistent with published ASHRAE content (i.e. Handbook Chapters) PC Chairs Training: Running Effective Meetings2

CIS Involvement ASHRAE is actively engaged in the development and maintenance of over 150 standards The value in those standards is realized when they are adopted and used CIS works with other model code and standards writing organizations (IAPMO, ICC, NFPA) to have ASHRAE standards adopted in their documents Many ASHRAE standards are adopted by reference PC Chairs Training: Running Effective Meetings3

ASHRAE and Code Interaction with TCs When an ASHRAE standard is not written in mandatory language or, where relevant, code intended language it cannot be adopted by reference and the criteria in the standard must be adapted for use in the other document ASHRAE is working with standards project committees to ensure they will provide mandatory and code intended language in their standards TCs can support code interaction by being a resource to ASHRAE Staff and Standards Committees in the development of ASHRAE standards and other model codes participating in the standards and code development process of IAPMO, ICC and NFPA to foster their reliance on ASHRAE standards PC Chairs Training: Running Effective Meetings4

ASHRAE and Code Interaction with TCs Proposals must be consistent with published ASHRAE Standards (not the Handbooks). Interaction with respect to TCs and the Handbook should be to ensure that codes permit for good engineering practice (the Handbooks). Please contact Steve Ferguson for more Mr. Ferguson is the Manager of Codes and is the Staff liaison to the Code Interaction Subcommittee PC Chairs Training: Running Effective Meetings5
