Work Package 5 : Raise public awareness as regards the marine environment Assess public awareness of the marine environment A questionnaire (2 versions ENG and FR) Set up and implement a communication strategy, with A large dissemination of the project towards the public during public events Educative activities with schools Exhibition (2 versions ENG and FR) Film ->Meeting between Océanopolis and NMA in April 2011

The questionnaire was divided into the following sections: General questions Open questions about marine environment The underwater observatories Information sources (level of trust) Applications 135 people answered at Oceanopolis, most of them coming from Brittany 102 responses from NMA were collected, mostly from South-West England Action 5.1 Assess public awareness of the marine environment

Questionnaire Analysis (Oceanopolis): Scientific cruises, satellites, observatories : the public often hears about the scientific activities, but considers being little of not informed (78.5; 88,12 & 87,4%) Interests of underwater observatories : 47,4 %- Having access to datasets in real time 11,1 % - Displaying data to any interested person, scientist or not 23,7 - Reducing sea cruises costs 37% - Measuring parameters without disturbing 48,9 % - Having a continuous access to long term data series 3,7% - No interest Action 5.1 Assess public awareness of the marine environment

Underwater Observatories : How informed do you feel about acoustics : Very low (88,9% not or very poorly informed) How informed do you feel about sea currents : Very low (82% not or very poorly informed) How informed do you feel about temperature : Very low (85,9% not or very poorly informed) Action 5.1 Assess public awareness of the marine environment

Theme 1 : How do we sense the sea / Observe and monitor the ocean ? Several methods : Satellites, research vessels, buoys, ROVs, Divers, cabled observatories, commercial vessels … What type of parameter is monitor, and what for ? Theme 2 : Medon Cabled observatory The panel is to be displayed on the top of the model Panel : Why chosing Molène Island : the sites characteristics Theme 3 : Focus on a case study : Acoustics Sea Bed Activity/ Scalops Boats traffic Ie : Focus on Ensta work Theme 4 : Whos working on such a project ? The educative activities with schools In Brest : Lycée de lHarteloire will participate from September 2011 In Plymouth : Marine Academy Plymouth will participate from September 2011 The teachers would like scientists to present the project to the pupils (in the school or at Aquariums) – October Date of the meeting between the 2 schools to be decided (February 2012) Action 5.1 Educative activities with schools
