Properties of Acids & Bases By: Ms. Bowie
Acids are substances that: Taste sour!
Property #2 Acids turns blue litmus paper red! Drop of acid on the litmus paper!
Property #3 An acid will NEUTRALIZE a base. That means that the pH of the base will drop down to around pH 7. H + + OH - H 2 O
Property #4 Acids conduct ELECTRICITY. ACID
Property #5 Acids react with active metals to produce hydrogen gas. HCl + Zn ZnCl + H 2 Note that precious metals like gold and platinum are not ACTIVE and do not react with acids.
Property #6 Acids react with carbonates to produce CARBON DIOXIDE GAS. HCl + baking soda CO 2 + …. (sodium bicarbonate ).
Properties of Bases
Bases are substances that: Taste bitter!
Property #2 Bases feel slippery! Or “Soapy”
Property #3 Bases turns red litmus paper blue! Drop of base on the litmus paper!
Property #4 A base will NEUTRALIZE an acid. That means that the pH of the acid will rise to around pH 7. H + + OH - H 2 O
Property #5 Bases also conduct ELECTRICITY. BASE
