What is a CAT? Assessment to know how well a class is going and how to change it CAT is NOT test Not graded Usually anonymous Mutually beneficial to teacher and student

Assessment Types Institutional Assessment overall view summative (feedback to compare to others) detailed, complex example – accreditation assessment Classroom Assessment Techniques context-specific formative (feedback to improve teaching & learning) simple, quick to give (most) example – see if a concept is understood by class – find out if students prefer in-class quiz or short essay

Defining Features Matrix Features MammalsReptiles Hair/fur x Produce milk x Live in a variety of places xx Ready to survive alone at birth x Human x Scales x Need parent to survive x Warm-blooded x CAT 9 – Assessing Skill in Analysis and Critical Thinking

Word Journal Wednesday – deep web article HIDDEN I thought the internet was big but fairly visible. I had no idea how much was really there but hidden. Most things seem to be there and free but they really aren’t. I Thought the articles we get free are really free. Is it true the library pays for them? Most people can’t see them? I chose hidden because I just learned there are lots of things I can’t see. So when I search Google there are results that somebody else might get that I don’t? CAT 14 – Assessing skill in synthesis and creative thinking

Human tableau or class modeling Rembrandt, “The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp” (1632). Oil on canvas. Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis. Photography Lesson of Ivan Iannoli (after Rembrandt) CAT 26 – Assessing skill in application and performance

Focused autobiographical sketches Write about a successful learning experience in a class in the past two years when you overcame a difficulty or problem. Last year in a class, I thought I would never understand geometry. Finally after one particularly intense tutoring session I started getting the questions right! Hard work, perseverance & help did it! CAT 33 – Assessing students’ self-awareness as learners

RSQC2 recall comment summarize connect question CAT 46 – Assessing learner reactions to class activities, assignments, and materials
