Safer Computing: Passwords Don’t give your passwords to anyone. UGA MyID passwords must be at least eight characters long and include at least one special character and one number (1234). Test how “strong” your password is at howsecureismypassword.net howsecureismypassword.net 13 Password Managers such as LastPass, Dashlane, KeePass can be helpful for creating and storing strong passwords for every account.

Safer Computing: Phishing Phishing is a scam designed to steal your identity. Phishing scams tend to look “official.” Students are highly vulnerable. UGA will never ask your student for their password. When in doubt, contact the EITS Help Desk. 14

Safer computing: Wireless networks PAWS-Secure: The preferred wireless network at UGA. Unsecured networks do not guaranteed privacy. Wi-Fi hotspots are mostly unsecured. Students frequently use Wi-Fi hotspots when off campus. 15

Safer computing: Downloading File sharing is frequently associated with illegal downloading and distribution; both are an infringement of copyright. The Office of Information Security receives copyright infringement notices from the copyright owners. Illegal downloading is a violation of the UGA computer use policies. Illegal downloading is also a violation of the student code of conduct and can result in disciplinary actions. 16

Safer computing: Downloading Legal sites with free or affordable content: Netflix Amazon iTunes Hulu Spotify 17

Safer Computing: Physical Security Don’t leave devices unattended. Record your device’s details in a safe place: Make and model Serial number MAC address Software product keys 18

Safer computing: Key steps Choose and use strong passwords. Adjust browser security settings to minimize online threats. Set up a personal firewall – most computers come with a firewall in place; it just needs to remain active. Keep programs and browsers up to date. Install and use an antivirus program. 19

Safer computing: Recommendations We recommend: For Windows - Microsoft Security Essentials; Malwarebytes For Macs - Sophos anti-virus home edition. 20
