Independent Reading Program

Reading Analysis  In addition to independent reading Bright Star Secondary Charter will incorporate reading analysis. Reading analysis has been embedded into core classes with the goal to have students read books selected by their teachers and student able to successfully analyze the content Academic Year 2

Literature classes  2 mandatory books per year (Titles pre-selected by Teacher)  Students read books independently  Students will be tested through analysis given during set dates  Teachers will track completion of book analysis through their gradebook Academic Year 3

History classes  2 mandatory books per year (Titles pre-selected by Teacher)  Students read books independently  Students will be tested through analysis given at set dates  Teachers will track completion of book analysis through their gradebook Academic Year 4

Math & Science classes  4 journals/magazines required  Students read journals/magazines independently  Students will be tested through analysis given at set dates  Teachers will track completion of book analysis through their gradebook Academic Year 5

9 th Grade  9 th graders will need to complete 100 independent reading points by the end of their 9 th grade year.  Students are able to select their own books and test through the reading counts system (SAM). Their 9 th grade literature teacher will have set times to log them in the reading counts system in order to take quizzes and accrue their reading counts points.  Students can check a books point value by going to the scholastic website: expert Academic Year 6

10 th Grade  10 th graders will need to have completed 200 independent reading points by the end of their 10 th grade year. Class of 2017 will only need 100 independent points by the end of this current school year ( )  Students are able to select their own books and test through the reading counts system (SAM). Their 10 th grade literature teacher will have set times to log them in the reading counts system in order to take quizzes and accrue their reading counts points.  Students can check a books point value by going to the scholastic website: expert Academic Year 7

11 th Grade Those rising juniors that have reached 400 points or more do not have to read anymore independent books, but must complete the in class portion All other juniors must reach 400 total independent points upon graduation, as well as the in class requirements  Students are able to select their own books and test through the reading counts system (SAM). Their 11 th grade literature teacher will have set times to log them in the reading counts system in order to take quizzes and accrue their reading counts points. Students can check a books point value by going to the scholastic website: expert Academic Year 8

12 th Grade  70% or higher reading counts points completed: Seniors have a choice:  Seniors remain on reading counts system and complete 1400 points and NO book analysis required or complete the 5 books and analysis  40%-70% reading counts points completed:  Students will complete reading analysis  40% and below:  Students will need to get the 400 reading counts points & book analysis Academic Year 9
