1 The provincial parenteral manual is a patient safety initiative lead by Alberta Health Services in partnership with Covenant Health. This is an electronic manual and will be updated and maintained by AHS. Covenant Health staff will use the manual as a reference to guide the administration of parenteral medications

3 Background The Provincial Parenteral Monographs (PPM) are approved by the Provincial Medication Management Committee (PMMC) and are maintained by Drug Information Services The new provincial monographs are a compilation of the diverse parenteral monographs of the former health regions and Alberta Cancer Board The new PPM is a convenient, accessible and reliable reference for drug therapy guidelines and parenteral drug information The new provincial monographs are NOT a comprehensive drug reference - if the information required is not found, consult alternate sources (i.e. Drug Information Services:

4 Parenteral Monograph Rollout Will take place in a phased rollout – the 1 st monographs will be implemented fall of 2013 Monographs will be rolled out as the therapeutic drug classes are completed. Will be accessed electronically NOTE:  Existing site specific monographs are to be used until a new provincial monograph is available

16 Required Education, Equipment or Monitoring The required monitoring outlined in the monographs must be performed and documented Know your Specialized Clinical Competencies (SCC) (where applicable to Site/Zone)

17 Specialized Clinical Competencies Definition: competencies that require application of expert level knowledge, skills, judgment, and critical thinking Acquired through additional education and practice It is the responsibility of the Healthcare Provider to be aware of their professional and/or site/zone specific Specialized Clinical Competencies

18 Who May Give “Who May Give” - This section is not included in the PMM Health care professionals are expected to work within their scope of practice and area of expertise (See Specialized Clinical Competencies) and are responsible for their own investigation when the question of “Who May Give” arises (ex, consult your manager, or the Professional Practice office at for answers)

21 EMS and the Monographs Inter-facility transfers: –For patients with existing parenteral medications infusing- Use of the AHS monograph is appropriate –Nursing staff and EMS staff work together to ensure appropriate information is shared –For example-nursing staff can print off current monograph and ensure EMS aware of pertinent information.
