How have people adapted to the environment? OBJECTIVES: I can give examples of how people adapted to and modified the physical environment. Key Words Environment Adapt Modify Irrigation ACTIVITIES: Adapt and Modify Notes Guiding Questions: How have people adapted to the environment? How have people modified the environment? :

What are some factors that affect where people live? WARM-UP What are some factors that affect where people live?

Human/Environment Interaction The environment affects not only where people live but also how people live.

Climate Landforms Bodies of water Vegetation Animals Environment Climate Landforms Bodies of water Vegetation Animals

Human/Environment Interaction What will you be able to do at the end of the lesson? Define adaptation and modification. Give examples of how people adapt to and modify their environment.

Human/Environment Interaction There are two main ways people interact with their environment (nature): 1. They adapt to it 2. They modify it

Human/Environment Interaction When people adapt to their environment they do not change it. They change their lives to fit the environment. People’s choice of food, shelter, clothing, sports is impacted by their environment.

Human/Environment Interaction Examples: People who live in hot climates wear clothes that keep them cool.

Human/Environment Interaction How did the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic in this picture adapt to their environment?

Human/Environment Interaction The Inuit designed their clothes for protection from the harsh cold climate. Traditional clothes are made of caribou or sealskin and include parka, pants, mittens, and boots.

Human/Environment Interaction Examples: People also design their shelter depending on the environment they live in.

Human/Environment Interaction In dry desert climates, builders of homes make windows small to keep out the sunlight.

Human/Environment Interaction People who live in areas with lots of trees may build their houses out of logs.

Human/Environment Interaction IGLOO How did these people adapt to their environment?

Human/Environment Interaction These people had to adapt to environment with lots of snow and used snow to build their homes.

Human/Environment Interaction Write down or draw at least one additional example of people adapting to their environment. Hint: food, sports.

Human/Environment Interaction When people modify their environment they change it. They build roads, bridges, canals, dams, irrigation systems, take natural resources out of the Earth, etc.

Human/Environment Interaction Examples: The people of New Orleans built levees to control the flooding of the Mississippi River.

Human/Environment Interaction Examples: People of Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt build irrigation systems.
