Principals Using NCTM Principles to Prepare Students Equity Curriculum Technology

Statement of Principles The Equity Principle Excellence in mathematics education requires equity– high expectations and strong support for all students. The Curriculum Principle A curriculum is more than a collection of activities: it must be coherent, focused on important mathematics, and well articulated across the grades. The Teaching Principle Effective mathematics teaching requires understanding what students know and need to learn and then challenging and supporting them to learn it well.

Statement of Principles The Learning Principle Students must learn mathematics with understanding, actively building new knowledge from experience and prior knowledge. The Assessment Principle Assessment should support the learning of important mathematics and furnish useful information to both teachers and students. The Technology Principle Technology is essential in teaching and learning mathematics; it influences the mathematics that is taught and enhances students’ learning.

7 Teaching, Learning, & Assessment Principles  How would these Principles help us in talking with these two teachers about the lessons we observed?  How might they help us supervise teachers at our own site—framing questions forpreconference, observation, postconference?  What kinds of professional development, resources, and supports do teachers need?

Why Is It Important to Set Higher Standards for Ourselves? Teachers and administrators are pivotal in changing the ways in which mathematics is taught and learned in schools. They need long-term support and adequate resources. Teachers cannot do it by themselves. They need long-term support and adequate resources.
