At its roots partnership is about investing students with the power to co-create, not just knowledge or learning, but the higher education institution itself. (NUS 2012, p. 8)

UELSU reps conference Indicator 1: Higher education providers, in partnership with their student body, define and promote the range of opportunities for any student to engage in educational enhancement and quality assurance. How does this work at UEL?

UELSU reps conference Indicator 2: Higher education providers create and maintain an environment within which students and staff engage in discussions that aim to bring about demonstrable enhancement of the educational experience.

UELSU reps conference Indicator 3: Arrangements exist for the effective representation of the collective student voice at all organisational levels, and these arrangements provide opportunities for all students to be heard.

UELSU reps conference Indicator 4: Higher education providers ensure that student representatives and staff have access to training and ongoing support to equip them to fulfil their roles in educational enhancement and quality assurance effectively.

UELSU reps conference Indicator 5: Students and staff engage in evidence- based discussions based on the mutual sharing of information.

UELSU reps conference Indicator 6: Staff and students disseminate and jointly recognise the enhancements made to the student educational experience, and the efforts of students in achieving these successes.

What skills do I need to be an effective committee member? Prior agenda knowledge – briefing from UELSU, keeping up to date with new policies, initiatives and current issues, reading minutes of past meetings. Finding out the views of other students. Listening/speaking skills Clarifying discussion outcomes eg asking Chair to summarise in meeting or afterwards. Reading paperwork – sharing workload. Getting items on agenda – procedure to be followed. Chasing actions – role of matters arising and action sheet.

After the meeting Discuss how the meeting has gone with the other UELSU Officers on the committee. Read and circulate minutes and feedback to other UELSU Officers. Report back to UELSU about the decisions that affect them and the responses to any issues you may have raised. Disseminating information or agreed actions to other reps (programme reps and other UELSU Officers). Canvassing opinion or consulting with other reps to form a UELSU position in time for the next meeting or to provide correspondence following a meeting. You may need to collect feedback on a particular issue to take to the next meeting.
