MYTON SCHOOL Multi Academy Trust Update – Dec 2014

Changing Educational Landscape The education landscape is changing both locally and nationally –Tough financial times ahead with increasing staff costs (pensions, NI) plus uncertainty re education funding –Curriculum changes across all phases –Locally, the Local Plan is gathering momentum The Association of School & College Leaders (ASCL) predicts that the majority of schools will be in some sort of collaboration in the next few years –There are now 4,500 academies across the country– half of these are already in a type of academy group e.g. a Multi-Academy Trust (“MAT”)

Myton School Response In response to these challenges and the changing landscape, Myton School Board of Directors voted on 7 th May 2014 in favour of Myton School developing a Multi-Academy Trust status. This can be achieved in one of two way: –Myton School developing its own MAT in partnership with other interested schools (secondary and/or primary) –Myton School joining an already established MAT

Community Academies Trust The Community Academies Trust (“CAT”), an already established local MAT comprising The Polesworth School (secondary), and 4 primaries, approached Myton School to see if we would be interested in joining the CAT. Myton School has been exploring this option and sees the benefits as follows: –Financial advantages / synergies in a climate of insecurity –Opportunities for staff (career development with a larger employer) –Sharing best practice across a group of like minded schools –Primary school expertise to assist with transition and move into designation –Increased local influence & support of the local school system –Improved quality assurance and governance

CAT Structure If Myton School joined the already established CAT, 2 local school “hubs” would be established –North Warwickshire i.e. Polesworth where the current CAT is located (comprising 4 schools currently) –South Warwickshire i.e. Warwick where Myton School and a number of primary schools are located - either already in the CAT (Budbrooke), or interested in joining. –The two “Hubs” would be governed by one Board of Directors / Trustees of the CAT who would delegate decision making powers down to the Local Hubs and Local Schools –The Local Hubs would have a Governing Body and the local schools would also keep their local governing bodies to ensure continued accountability both at the local level but also at the group level

Proposed CAT Structure CAT Board of Directors North Warwickshire Hub Governing Body South Warwickshire Hub Governing Body Polesworth Local Governing Body Birchwood Local Governing Body Dordon Local Governing Body Wood End Local Governing Body Myton Local Governing Body Budbrooke Local Governing Body “A N Other” Local Governing Body The level of governance representation at both the Hub level and CAT level will depend upon the size of the school, the Ofsted rating, and the level of delegation, delegated down to the local school. Myton School will have representation both at the CAT level and South Warwickshire Hub level as this potential collaboration is regarded as the joining together of 2 equal partners

Next Steps The Myton School Board of Directors are meeting on 15 th December and will be asked to take a vote on joining the CAT If the outcome of the vote supports joining the CAT, legal and financial due diligence including TUPE & stakeholder consultation will then take place (both by the CAT and Myton School) The Myton School Board of Directors and the CAT Board of Directors will need to vote again, following this due diligence process, before Myton School can join the CAT. This vote is likely to take place in February / March 2015.
