Presentation transcript:

Chapter Summary Section 1: Aggression Leads to War Germany’s anger over World War I reparations opened the door for Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. Hitler conquered three countries before France and Britain finally declared war. The U.S. followed a policy of isolationism and refused to get involved.

Chapter Summary (continued) Section 2: The United States at War The United States joined the war after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in late 1941. The U.S. joined the Allies, while Italy, Japan, and Germany formed the Axis Powers. The Axis Powers seemed unstoppable, but they gradually lost ground.

Chapter Summary (continued) Section 3: The War at Home U.S. industries produced military goods, and the resulting boom pulled the U.S. out of the Great Depression. Women gained new opportunities, but other minorities faced discrimination. Roosevelt gave in to irrational public fears and interned Japanese Americans for the duration of the war.

Chapter Summary (continued) Section 4: Toward Victory The D-Day invasion turned the tide of the war toward an Allied victory. The U.S. dropped two atomic bombs on Japan to force its surrender and the end of the war. Allied troops in Poland discovered Nazi death camps where millions of Jews and others had died.
