“ UTCs provide high quality technical education for year olds ensuring that students are well equipped for the jobs that industry needs and Higher Education.” Lord Baker of Dorking

Amanda Sergeant UTC Programme Manager CITB UTCs – what they are UTC History Why CITB is involved with UTCs What CITB wants from the UTC Engagement Programme CITB vision for WMCUTC What CITB offers the UTC

Rob Moreton – University of Wolverhampton Why UTCs are valuable for Universities University of Wolverhampton links with UTCs Specifically why WMCUTC Benefits for the University What the University offers the UTCs

Why: University links with UTCs The support of UTCs forms part of the University’s strategy for raising educational aspirations in the region Contributing to economic regeneration Promoting the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)

What: University links with UTCs The University currently sponsors 3 UTCs: - Black Country Engineering UTC (opened Sept 2011) For Sept 2015: - West Midlands Construction UTC (WMCUTC) - Health Futures UTC

WMCUTC UoW co-sponsors with Walsall College and CITB High level of employer engagement University integrally involved with curriculum development: - construction/built environment - ICT/Computing University guarantees place on degree programmes for given levels of achievement

Virtuous Circle: Real Commitment Supporting a UTC is not a trivial task and represents a significant investment on the part of the University (and Academic Faculty involved) To be successful, a fully costed project plan should be defined and appropriate budgets allocated to faculties and service departments. BEWARE of potential (?) gap between the logistical and financial commitments made during the bid process and the resources and budgets allocated for the development process.
