History of the Coffee Machine By: Rehnuma Riana & JaShaun Toppin IED- 4th period Mrs.Laing Invention: Coffee Machine

The original Coffee Machine. The original coffe maker was a container with a linen bag inside which held the coffee. You would then pour in the hot water, and let the coffee infuse into the water.

When was it invented? The original coffee maker or concept of the coffee maker began in 575 A.D. This was when the Turks were beginning to brew coffee. Many of the history was lost, so no one really knows how they started to brew the coffee or who started it. However, in 1818, the French invented the first coffee percolator. After this, in 1840, the Napier Vacuum Machine came along.

What need did the product address? The product addressed the need to brew and make coffee that otherwise would take a long and complicated process. Coffee is a favorable drink amongst many people, and the coffee maker allows us to make coffee quickly, and efficiently.

Who invented the product? The first coffee machine was made in 1818 by Mr. Laurens of Paris, France. His machine was a percolator type coffee machine.

Patents on the product

What materials were originally used to make the product? Some of the first coffee machines were made out of glass. This was because, back then many people didn’t know how to manufacture metals.

How was the product originally made? Some of the first coffee makers were hand -crafted and designed. This was because, back then there was no way to mass produce these coffee machines.

What improvements/major changes have been made to the product? There have been various improvements made to the coffee maker. For example, a heating system was added, which was then innovated to be powered electrically. Also, different styles and temperatures for brewing were added. There have also been new styles and designs to make the aesthetics of the coffee maker more appeleaning. Along with this, there were improvements made relating to the types of materials that were used. Instead of glass, coffee makers are made out metals and plastic to ensure safer use.

Why were these improvements made? These improvements were made to ensure that the coffee maker is safer, more efficient, practical and more appealing to the eye. The various improvements have made this product something that everyone can own at their home and use daily.

Who uses the products? Coffee drinkers all over the world use this product. One of the perks of this product is that it can be used by anyone, no matter what country you're from, what gender you are, or even how old you are. It is a universal product.

What is the global impact on society of the invention and subsequent innovations? The coffee maker has impacted society in many ways. It has helped shape many cafes and brought the joy of making and drinking coffee to our homes. Coffee is a very simple, yet influential drink. From the colonial times to now, it has been enjoyed by many and will continue to be enjoyed for years to come.

How would I change it? If I could change this product I would change how fast it makes the coffee. I would also put in a built in device, that would let me customize my coffee automatically. I would also put in a sugar/cream dispenser with a control. This would allow for instant coffee made exactly how you want it!

Disciplines of Engineering I believe that mechanical engineering has had the most impact on the design of the coffee maker. This is because the different parts and how to fit the parts together would fall into this category, and this is how the product was innovated.
