Legislative Update March 30, 2015 By Dale Shimasaki, Ph.D Strategic Education Services

Three points 1. Contentious fight over new Prop 98 $$$ 2. Legislation is Dynamic Process 3. SB 191-Block needs help in the Assembly

Proposition 98 Governor’s Budget is good beginning Senate feedback: May be the best K-14 education can expect $1 billion in new Proposition 98 $$$ to be diverted to other purposes [e.g. child care, employment programs]

SB 191-Block Good author Passed Senate Education committee on unanimous vote Assembly issues: Charter school issue Currently not priority

Advocacy on SB 191 Assemblymembers to Reach: Speaker Toni Atkins [D-San Diego] Patrick O’Donnell [D-Long Beach] Jimmy Gomez [D-Los Angeles] Local Assemblymember in your district Look for updates from Strategic Education Services via or twitter

Legislation Dynamic process, not static Bills must go through 4 committees If pass, goes to Governor Each stage requires new round of advocacy to new players in the game For this reason, don’t be surprised called upon to advocate at each or at specific stages of process Final deadline: October 11
