Solving Word Problems

Why Word Problems Math is used in your daily life. Think about it…. How do you use math?

Real Life When you use math in daily life, it seems that they are real life situations…word problems. We must learn how to “unpack” word problems so we know how to use them in life.. What method or plan do you use to solve word problems?

Key Words What key words do you use to help you solve word problems? Add Subtract Divide Multiple Equals

Key Words What key words do you use to help you solve word problems? Add: sum, plus, all together, total, in all Subtract: minus, losses, fewer than, less than, diminish, difference, how many more, decrease Divide: quotient, goes into, separate equally, each Multiply: product, times, duplicate, twice, of Equals: sum (+), same, answer, product (x), quotient (÷), difference (-), is, in all

Steps Read the problem Identify the question Find the important information Write an equation or plan to solve Solve Check to ensure it is logical Answer using words

Step 1: Read the problem Question: If it costs $3.20 to make one cut on a log, how much would it cost to cut a log into 4 pieces?

Step 2: Identify the question Question: If it costs $3.20 to make one cut on a log, how much would it cost to cut a log into 4 pieces?

Step 3: Find the important information Question: If it costs $3.20 to make one cut on a log, how much would it cost to cut a log into 4 pieces?

Write an equation or plan to solve Question: If it costs $3.20 to make one cut on a log, how much would it cost to cut a log into 4 pieces? 3.20 x 3 =

Solve Question: If it costs $3.20 to make one cut on a log, how much would it cost to cut a log into 4 pieces? 3.20 x 3 = $9.60

Answer using words It would cost $9.60 to make four pieces.

Question 2 Jessica is baking a cake. The recipe calls for 8 cups of flour and 6 cups of sugar. She already put in 4 cups of flour. How many more cups of flour does she need to add?

Question 3 The cost of admission to the county fair for 4 people is $30. At this rate, what would be the cost for 7 people?

Question 4: Carter buys a theme park ride pass for $48. Every time he rides, money is deducted from the value of the pass. He rode 8 rides and $32 was deducted from the value of the pass. How much does each ride cost?
