Nigerian Geotechnical Association (A Division of Nigerian Society of Engineers) Nigeria Member Society of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Port Harcourt Office National Secretariat: National Engineering Centre Off National Mosque – Labour House Road Central Business Area P.M.B Wuse, Abuja, Nigeria. 149 NTA Road, Mgbuoba New Layout, P. O. Box 415, Uniport Post Office, Choba; Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Chairman: Secretary/Programme Coordinator: Engr. Prof. Samuel U. Ejezie, PhD, FNSE Mobile: – Engr. Dr Scott B. Akpila, MNSE Tel: Mobile: To whom it may concern: STATEMENT OF TECHNICAL COMPETENCE AND OFFER TO PROVIDE LEARNING SERVICE The Nigerian Geotechnical Association (NGA) is the Geotechnical Engineering Division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) as well as the Nigerian Member Society of the International Society for soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). Objective of the Society: The aim of the Society is the promotion of co-operation amongst engineers and scientists for the advancement of, and dissemination of knowledge in the field of geotechnics, and its engineering and environmental applications. To achieve this aim the Nigerian Geotechnical Association embarks on the following activities: Exchange of information, and cooperation with other organisations whose aims are complementary to those of the Society. Holding of periodic Conferences, Symposia and Technical Workshops. Organising of continuing education & professional development programmes for members. Sanitization and Regulation of the practice of Geotechnical Engineering in the country by liaising with COREN to screen out unqualified practitioners and ensure excellence in the quality of service provided in the profession.

In furtherance to the above objective, the Nigerian Geotechnical Association has established a co-operative arrangement with operators of the oil and gas industry, NDDC, Government departments and parastatals, and other potential customers and users of the services provided by geotechnical engineers with a view to providing them with relevant professional advice when necessary. Most importantly, the NGA routinely provides expert services to clients desiring geotechnical engineering services. Prominent among the services are intensive courses, and training programmes. Through these learning events NGA provides clients with state-of-the-art knowledge targeted at solving problems in chosen areas of geotechnical engineering. In compliance with the Nigerian Content Policy, tested Nigerian geotechnical engineers from the universities, industries and the private sector are always selected to serve as facilitators in the exercise. Consequently, the service delivery is, most of the time, of exceptionally high quality. Learning outcomes of the courses and training events offered by NGA: At the end of the courses and learning events provided by Nigerian Geotechnical Association the participants are expected to acquire the following expertise: Ability to undertake the task of predicting the behaviour and performance of soils and rocks when used as construction materials or as support for constructed facilities in all engineering works involving earth materials. Examples of these predictions include the load-deformation characteristics of the natural (in-situ) soil or artificial (compacted) earth fill beneath structures. Ability to carryout subsurface investigation as well as site characterisation and evaluation at any location, including the marine environment, proposed for the construction of engineering structures. This activity enables the procurement of design data on physical, index and engineering properties of soils and rocks from laboratory tests on representative samples and complementary in-situ field tests. Ability to undertake the design of foundations and underground works for on-shore, coastal and offshore structures susceptible to complex force applications and environmental loads such as vibrations arising from power plant and machine operations, lateral and uplift forces associated with winds and wave loads. Surely by rendering this service NGA is contributing towards improving the local content in the engineering sector in line with the vision of the Nigerian Government. For and on behalf of Nigerian Geotechnical Association Engr. Prof. Samuel U. Ejezie (Chairman)
