How to Choose a Major Created by Frederick Community College Career Center (“Page Down” to view slide show)

Where Do I Begin? n Step #1 - In order to choose a major, you need to know yourself.

Start a list of what you should know about yourself in order to choose a major n What are your interests, skills, values and personality style? n What are courses you do or have done well in? n List volunteer, club and leisure activities that you have participated in and enjoyed. n What kind of people do you enjoy being around? n What words would you use to describe yourself? n What words would other people you know use to describe you? n Based on information you’ve now identified about yourself, what majors/careers come to mind?

Next Step n Step #2: In order to choose a major, you need to think about what type of career you want after college?

What type of career do you want after college? n Create a list of careers you are considering n How do you envision your future in 5 years, 10 years, and beyond? What do you see yourself doing? Where are you working? Describe your ideal workplace. Where are you living? What kinds of clothes are you wearing? What kind of car are you driving? Write your future story as you envision it to be today. n Research careers to find out what major(s) will best prepare you for these careers. n Based on information you’ve now identified about your future career possibilities and lifestyle, what majors/careers come to mind?

Next Step n Step #3: Talk to people who can provide you with good information about majors you are considering.

Who should you talk to about majors? n Academic Advisor n Professor(s) who teach classes within the major you are considering n Students currently in your considered major n Professionals working in careers you’re interested in to find out what major(s) will best prepare you for those careers

Optional Step - On-line Resource n Utilize Sigi3, a computerized career guidance program, available on-line from the FCC Career Center website to explore careers and majors. Stop in the Career and Transfer Center for log-in directions.

Optional Step - On-line Resource n Utilize the “Career Resource Links” feature on the Career Center website and click on “Self Assessments” to complete on-line exercises and receive feedback on careers and majors that are a good match for you

Optional Step - On-line Resource n Utilize the “Career Resource Links” feature on the Career Center website and click on “Career Exploration” to gather factual information that can aid you in deciding among careers and majors you are considering.

Optional Step - On-line Resource n Utilize the “Career Resource Links” feature on the Career Center website and click on “Career Exploration”. Then check out the various “What Can I Do With a Major in…” links to gather factual information about majors which can aid you in your decision.

Optional Step - People Resource n Take a career planning course or a course of interest. FCC has multiple class options that would help you in choosing a major. Ask your advisor what class would work best for you.

Optional Step - People Resource n Meet with a career counselor or attend a group workshop that would help you in choosing a major. Check the on-line career center calendar for dates and times.

Take a Moment to Reflect n Reflect on all the information you have or will have gathered. n What major(s) interest you? n What major(s) seem to be a good match for who you are and the career(s) you are interested in? n What do you believe are your next steps?

Good Luck in Choosing a Major! n If you have any questions, please contact the Career Center via the “Ask a Counselor” link on the Career Center website, give us a call at , or stop in the Career and Transfer Center located on the 1 st floor of the B/C Knuckle.
