Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy Why Are FMS Important? Fundamental Movement Skills Are the basic building blocks for the overall development of physical literacy Are critical for children to become competent in sporting activities Without them, many children and youth choose to withdraw from sport Much like learning the alphabet and phonics are needed to eventually read Shakespeare, or identifying numbers and learning to add and subtract are the fundamental skills needed to eventually balance a cheque-book. Without the development of fundamental skills, many children and youth choose to withdraw from sport and turn to more inactive and/or unhealthy choices during their leisure time. Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy Categories of FMS FMS include: Locomotor skills: consist of total body movement Stability skills: includes the ability to sense a shift in the body and adjust for it Object manipulation: a force given or received Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy

Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy If there is time do the following: Try and come up with some examples for each category Split participants into three groups—provide charting paper and markers. (6 groups possibly) Assign each group a category and have them develop a list 5minutes Have participants present their list, and review it with the lists on the following slides If time is tight: Do brainstorming as a large group Ever Active Schools: Physical Literacy
