8-4 Perpendicular Vectors 8-5 Application of Vectors

a)Draw the situation b)Find the total force on the bull c) Find the angle of the resultant (the angle the bull is being pulled)

White Oak is having a 4 way tug-of-war between the freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors. The freshman are pulling at a 34° angle with a force of 330 N. The sophomores are pulling at 112° with a 340N force. The juniors and pulling at 200° with 290N force, and the seniors are pulling at a 330° angle with a force of 400N. Who will win?

When forces are acting on an object (such as pushing or gravity) and yet it is not moving, that must mean the resultant vector is 0. This is called equilibrium. A big screen TV is hanging from the ceiling of a bar from two identical cables. The cables form a 140° with each other. If the TV is 950lbs, find the force exerted on each cable. (hint: redraw tip-to-tail…find all angles)

An airplane is trying to fly 600mph 30° north of east. However, there is a 45mph wind at a direction of 32° southwest. Find the actually speed and direction of the plane.

Mrs. McGrath is swimming in Lake Michigan. She swims at 3.2 MPH, 32° north of west. There is a 0.8 MPH current running 17° east of south. Find Mrs. McGrath’s resulting velocity (speed and direction).
