Narcissistic Personality Disorder  People with Narcissistic Personality Disorder are usually filled with thoughts of self importance and that they are higher up than the people around them.  Usually very arrogant expects to be treated in an unrealistic manner.  Often have thoughts of great fortune and success.  The cause of NPD is unknown, however some argue that it is caused by either pampering, high expectations, abuse or negligence during childhood.

Example 1: Envy and Arrogance  People with NPD usually are envious of others and shows very arrogant behavior   In this clip, Squidward is very envious of his rival, Squiliam Fancyson, and responds with anger.

Example 2: Thinking you are “special”  People who suffer from NPD think that they are special in some way. In Squidward’s case, he thinks he is much more skilled in the arts and music, thus thinking no one else has “good tastes”  clip.html clip.html  In this clip, Squidward thinks he is special, so he tries to teach Spongebob art, even though Spongebob obviously already knows what he is doing.

Example 3: Self-Importance and fantasies of success  NPD causes people who suffer to feel very self-important, as well as having thoughts of their own success in their future.  clip.html clip.html  Squidward in this clip tells Spongebob of how much of a success he will be, resulting in his ultimate failure.

Treatments of NPD  No drugs can be used in order to treat NPD, however if you are suffering depression due to your NPD, anti-depressants can be prescribed.  Typically the treatment is therapy in the form of group and family therapy. Therapy make take up to years to take effect due to the difficulty of changing the patient’s personality traits.
