“How can we enhance the contribution of higher education to the changing process of economic, social and cultural innovation?” What is the Role of HEIs? Educating students Creators of knowledge Public Good How have HEIs contributed to Innovation thus far? Research & Development Patents Commercialisation What has facilitated this contribution? Greater cooperation between HEIs (PRTLI) Greater cooperation between HEIs and industry (SFI/EI/IRC) Greater cooperation between HEIs and policy makers (IRC/HRB) There was a mechanism/cultural driver Education was the enabler

What about business and civil society? What are we doing in Ireland? How are we driving this? What is our mechanism?

These questions need to be front and centre when we make recommendations on the “future funding of higher education” How will HEIs enable and enhance innovation across these sectors? What will be the mechanism for engagement with business sector and civil society? Will these mechanisms still be driven through R&D? What are we doing in Ireland? How are we driving this? What is our mechanism? = innovation? Student/staff ratio 8.2 Student/staff ratio 10.7
