 Active Engagement  Examine the handout Independent Practice: Applying Comprehension Strategies and Knowledge of Text Structure  Read the beginning of “A&P” and think aloud as you go, using reading strategies and pointing out major story elements, analyzing the text structure, and identifying and connecting details to hypothesize about the central idea (theme).  Use the handout Independent Practice: Applying Comprehension Strategies and Knowledge of Text Structure as a guide for the reading and annotating.  Independent Practice  Choose a short story that interests you. Turn and talk  Read the short story with a partner who chose the same one.  Discuss your reading strategies and point out major story elements, analyze the text structure, and identify and connect details to hypothesize about the central idea (theme).  Use your selected story for the mid-unit assessment task.
