Technical Solutions Australia Innovative electronic Assistive Technology

Home Automation as Assistive Technology

We like consumer equipment that is also Assistive Technology!

…and the Word was…

Bluetooth, Zwave Zigbee, Insteon… Mobile data…

“Traditional” ECU Designed & built specifically to assist people with limited dexterity to access and control aspects of their environment.

“Traditional” ECU interface optimised for disability predominately local control main output is infra red signals Relatively simple relationship between selection and end function

Automation …the use of machines and technology to make processes run on their own without manpower yourdictionary.com

Automation …the use of machines and technology to make processes run on their own without manpower yourdictionary.com

Evolution of Home Automation Remote control of lights Timed control set up via a computer Dedicated displays and touch screens Remote access using web browser and apps.

Types of Home Automation Energy Control Lights, heating Lifestyle …add control of entertainment systems, audio, media server, intercom, security system

Types of Home Automation Proprietary System uses proprietary protocols, all components generally come from single manufacturer. Open source Uses standards based or published protocols, 3 rd party components are available (and encouraged)

HA or ECU

Comparing HA with ECU is a helpful strategy to use when selecting a HA system as Assistive Technology.

Comparisons – Access methods HAECU Touch/directYY Switch Scanning?YY Auditory ScanningNY Speech RecognitionYy EyeGazeY?Y Dedicated AppYN Web ServerYN Remote (via internet)YN Multiple usersYN

Comparisons – Access methods

Comparisons – Install & Setup HAECU Fixed wiring, permanent installation. Better suited to stable housing situations. Mostly portable. (Can take to respite care and holiday.) Expert installation and commissioning on site required Can be set up remotely. On site installation and training ideal, but can be worked around.

Comparisons – changes HAECU Expert assistance with dedicated software required, some changes can be done remotely. Most users or supporters can do by following instructions (and phone support!) Reprogramming Eg. New TV requires service visit

Comparisons – service life HAECU Most of system is fixed, so user interface is only component subject to wear. Whole system is subject to wear. Varies greatly depending on user lifestyle and quality of carers. Failures are likely to be the user interface Eg. Tablet or phone which is easily replaced Failure makes whole system unavailable.

Summary… Is HA relevant for use as Assistive Technology? – Absolutely! Is it a simple replacement? – No

Summary… Home Automation systems have the potential to provide cost effective, reliable control systems for some users. Research and a detailed consideration of all the facets involved will determine how well the equipment serves the client.
