Say “No!” Saying no to someone you like is very hard. When you give in to negative peer pressure you’re going against your values. When you are in a tough situation, be sure to use your refusal skills and say no. When using refusal skills, also use nonverbal communication. Stand your ground, and shake your head. Nonverbal communications actions help you get your message across.

Refusal Skills Refusal Skills are different ways of saying no to things that you don’t want to do. Here are some refusal skill examples. -Say no. Be polite, but clear. -Stay focused, be true to yourself. -Stand your ground. Don’t get talked into something you don’t want to do. -Walk away. -Avoid risky situations.

Plan Ahead Take steps to avoid dangerous situations. Make a mental list of what you would say no to. Think of what you are tempted by, and think of what you would say if offered that. Remember that the easiest way to prevent problems is to avoid risky situations. Always go with your feelings, you will not regret it.

Have a Support System The hardest thing about saying no to peer pressure is feeling alone and that you will lose your friends. Real friends will support you when you stand up for what you believe. You need a support system. A support system is made up of family members and friends who will stand by you and will encourage you when times get hard. You wont feel alone with a support system. Talk to your parents when you have questions about negative peer pressure. With support, you will feel good about your ability to say no.
