Biography A biography is a true story written about a real person’s life. If the author writes it about himself/herself it is called an autobiography.

Main Idea Finding main idea and details in biographies

What is the main idea? The main idea is what the article, passage, or paragraph is mainly about. You can use events in the person’s life as main ideas about that person.

What are details? Details will give you more specific information about the main idea. Details support the main idea. Details give examples about, explain, prove, or describe the main idea. In a biography you can look for or give more information about an event in the person’s life.

Susan B. Anthony When Susan B. Anthony was young, life was unfair for women. They could not vote. They were paid less than men for the same job. They could not own property. They even had to give their money to their husbands. *Main idea *Details

Sequencing Sequence is the order in which events happen or occur. There are many signal words to look for including first, next, then, finally, after that, before, and later. In a biography you can also look for dates or the person’s age to help with sequencing.
