working on behalf of Developing people for health and healthcare Coaching and Mentoring Dr Rebecca Viney “We cannot teach people anything; we can only help them discover it within themselves” Galileo Galilei “We cannot teach people anything; we can only help

working on behalf of Developing people for health and healthcare What will we do? Consider the attributes of a good coach / mentor Practice a mentoring style of questioning Think about the benefits of coaching skills Consider the benefits for patients

working on behalf of Developing people for health and healthcare In twos Think of someone who was a strong positive influence on your development and growth – not a parent or someone in a teacher role What did they do? What was so powerful for you? What behaviours? 3 minutes each

working on behalf of Developing people for health and healthcare The advice exercise: Think of something that you have been wanting to do something about, but haven’t managed e.g. a New Years resolution. Now tell your colleague about that. And get your colleague to give you their best advice for no longer than a minute, then swap round for a further minute.

working on behalf of Developing people for health and healthcare How useful was that?

working on behalf of Developing people for health and healthcare A mentor is a person who helps another to think things through… Mentoring: “Coaching and mentoring are learning relationships which help people to take charge of their own development, to release their potential and to achieve results which they value” (Connor and Pokora, 2007) “Someone who helps another person to become what that person aspires to be” (Montreal CEGEP, 1988)

working on behalf of Developing people for health and healthcare Foundation principles 1.The client is resourceful 2.The coach’s role is to develop this through questioning, challenge and support 3.Coaching addresses the whole person in time context 4.The client sets the agenda 5.The coach and client are equals 6.Coaching is about change and action
