Presentation transcript:

Separating A Mixture

Purpose: Separate a mixture using physical properties. Materials: Mixture of: Sand, Iron, Sugar, Pebbles Screen Magnet Filter Paper Water Hot Plate Cup Safety Precaution: Wash your hands after the lab, be careful of the hot plate

Procedure Separate out each of the components of the mixture. What will the screen separate out? Try it. What will the magnet separate out? Try it. What will the filter paper separate out? Try it. Record your findings on the data table.

Data Table Separator What is separated out? What is left? Screen Magnet Filter Paper Evaporation

Questions What properties did you use to separate the mixture? (Physical or Chemical) What property did you use to separate out: ? The pebbles The iron filings The sand The flour 3. Tomato harvesters use the fact that unripe tomatoes sink to separate out ripe tomatoes, what is the physical property used to separate tomatoes? 4. Did any of the materials change state?
