Getting Results through Individual & Organizational Accountability The Oz Principle Annette Jones, SBSE Territory Manager Jennifer Williams, Retired LB&I Territory Manager

Objective Getting results through Accountability Understand actions that keep you “Below the Line” Moving yourself “Above the Line” Setting key expectations Identify actions that lead to results

The Wizard of Oz describes the journey of the characters as they come to realize they possessed the power to change and were not victims of their circumstances.

The wizard of oz characters Dorothy Scarecrow Tin Man Lion Wizard

Albert Einstein Man must cease attributing his problems to his environment, and learn again to exercise his will – his personal responsibility.

Definition of Accountability What does accountability mean to you? Definition – An obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions.

Accountability Above the Line Below the Line See It Own It Solve It Making excuses easier than accepting responsibility Recognize “Below the Line” Behavior

Confusion/Tell Me What to Do The victim cycle Ignore/Deny It It’s Not My Job Finger Pointing Confusion/Tell Me What to Do Cover Your Tail Wait and See

My Past Other’s Response Other’s Behavior Other’s Attitude Things I can control Things I cannot control My Attitude My Emotions My Behavior My Past Other’s Response Other’s Behavior Other’s Attitude List examples……..

Charles Swindoll We cannot change our past. We can not change the fact that people act in a certain way. We can not change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes.

Eleanor Roosevelt In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.

Personal accountability Connors, Smith & Hickman in The Oz Principle “A personal choice to rise above one’s circumstances and demonstrate the ownership necessary for achieving desired results – to See It, Own It, Solve It and Do It.”

Four steps to accountability See It – Acknowledge the Problem Own It – Take Personal Responsibility for the Problem….. You are the “master of your ship” Solve It – Determine What I Can Do. Do It – Take Action

See it – acknowledge the problem Get the perspective of others Ask for and offer feedback Be realistic Be honest with yourself; admit mistakes Consider all the facts

Own it – take responsibility for it Be personally invested How did you contribute to the problem Answer for personal commitments Act on feedback Align my work with the results the organization is trying to achieve

Solve it – determine what I can do Ask, “What else can I do?” Redefine boundaries Test assumptions Recognize there are some things out of my control

Do it – take action Clarify responsibilities Report proactively Relentlessly follow up Do what I say I’ll do Measure progress

Personal accountability assessment Assess where you stand…..
