FA0802 FEED FOR HEALTH 2008  2012 Objectives To develop an integrated and collaborative network of research groups that focuses on the roles of feed and animal nutrition in improving animal health and also the quality, safety and wholesomeness of human foods of animal origin Examine the perception of consumers as regards the effects of feed production processes on animal health and on the quality and safety of the resulting food products Main Achievements Identification of a few ‘big issues’ which will affect food supply and health in the EU over the next years. These will include: feed and food security (production efficiency) Feed and food safety (e.g. methods implementation) nutrition of target populations (e.g. the elderly) land-based versus marine food production production conflicts (e.g. feed-food-fibre-fuel) sustainability of livestock production Interdisciplinary networking: e.g. between social science (consumer concerns and perception) and animal science The necessity to improve contacts among producers and consumers from a consumer perspective, healthy innovations are highly product specific, context specific and segment specific. healthy innovations may favourably be supported by appropriate consumer communication. consumers do not compromise on taste for health benefits. Working Group 1: Feed and food for health This WG will integrate and collate basic knowledge on (a) the roles of feed and feed components in animal health, and (b) the role of animal nutrition in designing functional foods. A Further objective is: Identify sustainable nutritional strategies for producing functional and nutritious foods of animal origin that can have health benefits for humans. Working Group 2: Feed Safety This WG will integrate and collate knowledge on feed safety. Further objectives are: Identify undesirable substances in the food chain of natural or anthropogenic origin that merit further; Improve knowledge about the relations between limits of contaminants in feed and corresponding levels in human food.; Evaluate existing analytical methods. Working Group 3: Feed Supply: This WG will carry out an analysis of problems pertaining to the farm animal feed supply. Further objectives are: Comprehensively examine problems of the feed supply chain as they affect Europe; Examine possible changes in feed formulations including examination of possibilities for diversifying the materials used to produce compound feeds; Review feed technology in terms of comparative aspects of different feed production systems and technology. Working Group 4: Consumer concerns and perceptions Review consumer perceptions of livestock production systems. Further objectives are: Examine the preoccupations of consumers as regards the effects of feed production processes on animal health and on the quality and safety of the resulting food products; Evaluate the attitudes of consumers to scientific innovations in the area of feed production and their effects on animal welfare and human welfare. Evaluate the sources that consumers use to obtain information about foods of animal origin.
