Set aside time for your child to read each day Develop math skills Encourage writing Use web resources to find ideas or good websites for your kids to practice academic skills while having fun Use everyday activities as learning opportunities for kids
Set aside time to read everyday! minutes is all it takes! To keep track of reading, tally it on your calendar! Visit the library Help your child find books (Just Right Books) Let their interests guide book selections
Every kind of reading counts! Students can read independently Read to your child Have your child read to you Read for real purposes ▪ Read a recipe as you bake ▪ Read the shopping list ▪ Read directions ▪ Read print when you are out and about (ex. store signs)
Use math daily for real purposes! Practice mental math Hundreds Chart Examples of practice activities Just 3 – 4 math problems per day during the summer can prevent students’ math skills from getting rusty Use web links provided to find practical activities to keep kids thinking about math
Journal about daily events or activities Create your own book by writing the story and illustrating the pictures Printable Paper: Make a scrapbook of a trip and write about each drawing or photo Write a letter to a friend or relative Write a creative paragraph If you want to challenge students, have them use a thesaurus and learn new words to replace more common ones.
Have your kids help you count, sort and organize things Talk about your day and experiences to build rich language Cook or bake together and have your child read and measure with your guidance Have your child make the grocery list with you and do all the writing Let your child count money to pay for items or figure out how much change you will get back
