Conducting A QSO - Phone

Conducting A QSO – Phone (cont.) Rule Number 1 – Listen

Conducting A QSO – Phone (cont.) Four methods to make a contact – Call CQ – Answer a CQ or QRZ – Joining a QSO in progress – Break in – Tail ending

Conducting A QSO – Phone (cont.) Calling CQ – Listen for an open frequency Minimum of 3 KHz away from a signal After tuning the transmitter, ask if frequency is in use If no one responds, call CQ Keep it short – “CQ CQ calling CQ this is W4XYZ, Whiskey-Four- Xray-Yankee- Zulu” – Learn phonetics (see last slide) – Repeat once – wait for a response

Conducting A QSO – Phone (cont.) After response, call back – “K8ABC, Kilo-Four-Alpha-Bravo-Charlie this is W4XYZ” – Next the essentials Thanks for the call back – Signal report: 5-9, 5-8, 5-7, etc. – Name is John – Juliet-Oscar-Hotel-November – QTH is Bluffton, SC Back to you – K8ABC this is W4XYZ

Conducting A QSO – Phone (cont.) Next Round – Exchange call signs Describe station and antenna – “I am using a Kenwood TS-480 running 100 watts to a dipole up about 40 feet” Now you are ready for general discussion Items you can talk about – Use the other ham’s name at least once on each transmission – Talk about being a new ham – Ask how long he has been a ham – Ask for any advice he can give you

Conducting A QSO – Phone (cont.) – Ask questions about his location – Professional background – Other hobbies you or he may have Answering a CQ or QRZ – Same procedure as calling CQ Joining a QSO in progress – Break in – When listening to two or more hams in a discussion Announce your call sign once

Conducting A QSO – Phone (cont.) When one of the hams acknowledges you – Announce your call sign again with phonetics and your name – Tell them you put up a new antenna and you would like a signal report – Ask if you can join in – Most hams are happy to have another person in the group Go through the same disclosures as before Tail ending – Wait until the QSO you are listening to is over – Call the station you wish to talk to This works about half the time Each station may sign off or change frequency before you complete the call Go through the same disclosures as before
